Kantor_Traces” is a Polish-Japanese dance/theatre project which aims at interdisciplinary dialogue with the art of famous Polish director - Tadeusz Kantor. The project was initiated by Mrs Misako Ueda (Theatre X, Tokyo) and Katarzyna Pastuszak, and is created within UNESCO “Year of Tadeusz Kantor” by the Polish collective Amareya Theatre & Guests and Japanese artists such as the famous Japanese choreographer - Saburo Teshigawara (KARAS).

“Kantor_Traces” project encompasses a coproduction of performance „Kantor_Traces: ON A SUNNY DAY” choreographed and directed by Saburo Teshigawara (Karas, Tokyo). It will be performed by Saburo Teshigawara, Rihoko Sato and Amareya Theatre members – Katarzyna Pastuszak and Agnieszka Kamińska. The premiere of „Kantor_Traces: ON A SUNNY DAY” performance will take place on the 29th October in Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre and following presentations will be held in Centre for Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor – Cricoteka (Cracow) and in Theatre X in Tokyo within the framework of „Tadeusz Kantor GoEnNen Performance Festival 2015”.

The project encompasses also the creation of performance/happening „Kantor_Traces: COLLAGE” where contemporary dance, butō, performance art, experimental music and visual art will collide. The premiere will be presented in the New Synagogue thanks to the hospitality of the Jewish Community in Gdańsk. „Kantor_Traces: COLLAGE” was directly inspired by the deep yet unplumbed relation between Ankoku butōdeveloped by Hijikata Tatsumi and aesthetic theories and art of Tadeusz Kantor.

„Kantor_Traces: COLLAGE” features butō dancers – Yuko Kawamoto, Kae Ishimoto, Rui Ishihara and Polish artists such as Daniela Komędera, dancers/performers of Amareya – Katarzyna Pastuszak, Aleksandra Śliwińska and Agnieszka Kamińska, musicians - Joanna Duda and Jan Młynarski, performer - Anna Kalwajtys, the objects have been designed by sculptors – Adriana Majdzińska and Grażyna Tomaszewska-Sobko, and the visual artist Mon Decoded (Monika Matsumoto Art).

Additionally – an important element of the project is formed by the photo exhibition called “At Schulz's” with photographs made by Mariusz Kubielas.

The project will also encompass the presentation of documentary film on Tadeusz Kantor's life and art entitled “ This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ” directed by Krzysztof Miklaszewski, as well as Anna Królica's lecture “Dance in Tadeusz Kantor's works” and the presentation of the only full documentation of the performance "Kurka wodna" (the British debut of Tadeusz Kantor, Edinburgh, 1972), and a meeting with Richard Demarco.

The project also has its publication – a booklet including unique texts and visual materials about the reception of Tadeusz Kantor's art in Japan. The booklet has been edited by Nikodem Karolak (Adam Mickiewicz University), Anna Królica (Jagiellonian University), Katarzyna Pastuszak.

We should also mention that the project was initiated and inspired by Mrs Misako Ueda – Artistic Director of Theatre X in Tokyo. Mrs Misako Ueda has always been a great promotor of Polish culture in Japan for which she was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 1992. She was the producer of theatre projects with Andrzej Wajda and Jan Peszek, among others. In 2014 she invited Amareya Theatre & Guests to present performance “Nomadic Woman” in Theatre X. At that point the fruitful and deep cooperation between the Polish collective and Mrs Misako Ueda started
